Dear Hemmeter Families,
We are pleased to let you know that your third, fourth, and fifth grade Hemmeter student is eligible to participate in the Northwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search (NUMATS), sponsored by the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University.
NUMATS is a research-validated, above-grade level testing program which offers the EXPLORE, ACT, or SAT to qualify students in third through ninth grades. These tests are internationally recognized measures of academic ability that have been designed for older students. Studies show that there are significant and large ability differences among students who score in the top ten percent on grade level tests. When these students take tests meant for older students, the differences are more apparent, and programming can be geared to meet their individual needs. Although participation in NUMATS is absolutely voluntary, students like your child truly can benefit.
Your child has qualified to participate in NUMATS via their enrollment in Hemmeter’s gifted and talented magnet program. By taking part, your child will:
ü Acquire experience and practice taking above-grade level tests ü Receive important information about their academic ability which in-grade achievement tests will not provide ü Receive information about educational programs for gifted and talented students ü Receive academic planning and resource options based on their scores
NUMATS testing takes place on weekends, so it doesn’t interfere with school time. The fees to register for NUMATS range from $60 to $82, depending upon the test. Financial aid is available for students who qualify for a federally subsidized program such as the Free and Reduced Lunch Program.
Registration for NUMATS is open for the January and February testing dates. Later test dates are available for ACT and SAT test takers, but students must test before March to have their scores considered for NUMATS award ceremonies in the spring. We encourage you to read the NUMATS Registration Handbook or go to www.ctd.northwestern.edu/numats for complete details.
Online registration for NUMATS and the EXPLORE, ACT, or SAT test is available at: www.ctd.northwestern.edu/numats/register . When you register online, you will choose a test and a date, and request test centers available in our area. The fees are payable with a Visa or MasterCard. Testing locations are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis, so we recommend registering as early as possible.
Please use Hemmeter’s NUMATS ID number in step 3 of the online registration: 8201882.
If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to call Jim Bailey via the information below, or contact the Center for Talent Development directly at 847-491-3782 extension 3.
Sincerely,
Jim Bailey
