The Starfish Poem

An old man walked the ocean beach the morning after a violent storm. He noticed a young man ahead of him, picking up starfish and flinging them into the sea.

Finally, unable to contain himself, the old man approached the youth and asked him why he was doing this. The young man replied that the stranded starfish would die if left on the beach in the morning sun. "But the beach goes on for miles and there are thousands of starfish," countered the old man. "What you are doing won't make any difference!"

The young man looked at the starfish in his hand and said, "It makes a difference to this one."

I cannot save all of the children - the abused, the homeless, the impaired. I cannot help all of the parents - the depressed, the desperate, the frustrated. To the best of my ability I can help the families I meet each day and know in my heart, I make a difference.
