School at Mackinaw High

About Mackinaw High School

Advisory

Each student is assigned a staff member as an advisor and students are required to meet with the advisor who will conduct one-on-one weekly meetings to discuss important issues and help the student stay on track. It is the students' responsibility to meet with their advisor each week between 11:05 a.m. and 11:25 a.m. unless a different time of day is agreed upon.

Learning Responsibility

There is a certified teacher in each subject area room.  In the self-paced classes, the teacher works as a facilitator enabling the teacher to help students on a one-on-one basis, and as needed.  We have designed our program to eliminate most barriers to student learning, but students must take responsibility for their learning at Mackinaw, ask questions while at school, and do homework. Flexible scheduling allows students that are 18 and over to go to school around their ever changing schedule. Students will remain in the same classes until they complete a class.  The best recipe for success is for students to attend daily AND put in their best effort daily.  Seat time does not necessarily equate to learning.  Without putting in a consistent effort, students will struggle to reach their goals. Our motto is, "Success Through Effort" and our teachers help students make that statement a reality.

Flexible Scheduling

What is flexible scheduling? The school has two types of classes; Structured and Self-Paced.

Structured Class: Our Physical Science classes is a structured class. Students must attend and complete assignments to demonstrate proficiency. The same class is offered at different hours of the day. The student may also get additional assistance during open lab times in each of these classrooms and in the Student Center.

The Self-Paced Classes: includes English, Career Planning, Computers, VPAA, Spanish, Math, Social Studies, Health, PE, and Biology. Students in each of these classes may be working on a different assignment. When a student has demonstrated proficiency he/she moves to the next objective on the skills checklist. When all skills have been demonstrated to teacher satisfaction, the class is complete. Some students move quickly, others at a slower pace. A certified teacher is in every room and assists students on a one-on-one basis.
